It was one twenty-seven in the morning, and the only illumination came from the muted television. Corabel’s mother had made them turn the lights off hours ago. Hannah watched her best friend’s face change as a rerun of Three’s Company sent shadows flickering across it. At fourteen, Cora had just crossed the boundary from adolescent awkwardness to something like beauty, and the dim scattered light made her look older, more mysterious. Lately there were secrets locked up in her smile, and Hannah thought maybe if they could just stay up late enough and talk long enough, everything might become clear. “Again?” “Yeah, a new one.” Hannah’s eyes narrowed. “Only if you tell me what Bobby and you did in the drama loft yesterday.” “Nothing!
